As we fast approach the close of Term 2 I reflect on the extraordinary role of the Principal and their leadership team. The scope and magnitude of their roles and the depth of knowledge they hold both professionally and personally. I hear and I see the far-reaching impact YOU have in your school and I say with great sincerity a heartfelt THANKYOU. This term I have had the opportunity to connect with many Principal colleagues – we have shared the narrative of the day to day, celebrated the most amazing successes and walked shoulder to shoulder with some of the most challenging and confronting. NEVER underestimate your role, your effort, your work, your commitment, your ability to face adversity, your ability celebrate and acknowledge your - team | teachers | students | community and each other, your resilience, your focus - the work you do each and every day is in fact EXTRAORDINARY. YOUR work is the difference in our schools.
Have a well-deserved break during the upcoming holiday – consciously step away from school – this is the opportunity for you to rest, recover, reset and reenergise. We must prioritise ourselves in the recovery cycle – families and friends need and deserve the best version of you.
Look forward to catching up with you in Term 3!
NAIDOC Week 2021 | Heal Country:
The official launch of NAIDOC Week 2021 took place at Parramatta on Tuesday. NAIDOC Week is a time to reflect and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of First Nation Peoples, recognising them as the Traditional Custodians of the land. This years’ theme ‘Heal Country‘ calls for us all to continue seeking greater protections for land, waterways, sacred sites and cultural heritage.
The Aboriginal Outcomes and Partnerships Directorate is coordinating virtual events from 21-25 June as NAIDOC Week occurs during the school holidays. The official NAIDOC Week is 4-11 July.
The event at Parramatta was extraordinary – a smoking ceremony, student performances from Inner West Performing Arts High School and an incredibly moving performance from Ziggy Ramo. I don’t think there was a person in the room who wasn’t visibly moved by his performance – I encourage you to YouTube him and listen to his version of the Paul Kelly song – Little Things.
Congratulations to Karen Jones and her team – such an amazing event – very privileged to attend.
As we head into holidays, there have been an increase in the number of COVID positive cases in NSW. The updates the Department have been providing have been informative and again schools have been agile in their approach. All schools remain alert and ready to take learning to an online model if, and when required. Depending on community transmission over the holidays Term 3 could in fact look different for some schools. COVID 19 updates will be communicated to us during the holiday period. Many schools have been supported in anticipation of further lockdown procedures that may be put in place. Please make sure you have completed the Learning From Home Readiness Survey. This Survey is important for us to complete to ensure the Department has accurate information and to support the preparedness of our schools.

PPC Meetings, Visits with the NSWPPA State Executive | Planning for 2022:
The NSWPPA State Executive and I have engaged with numerous PPC’s and attended their meetings and Conferences. We have also had the opportunity to connect with PPC Executives via ZOOM and in person for breakfast meetings.
There is such great value and importance for the communication between PPC’s and the State Executive to feed forward and back. This addresses local and state issues and builds a sense of context specific needs. The voice of the membership is key to the Executive advocating, leading and representing the Principal voice.
With this in mind, when PPC Executive are planning their meetings for 2022, I ask you check the NSWPPA Calendar – I ask you consider planning your PPC Meetings and Conferences on dates NSWPPA State Executive and I can join you. NSWPPA State Executive meet twice a term for an Executive Meeting and in Week 7 for State Council.
Please think creatively about how you would like us to engage with you and start planning – bookings are to go through Lisa Beare NSWPPA Business Manager lisa.beare@det.nsw.edu.au. Each PPC has an Executive Liaison for their PPC.
Looking forward to seeing many of you in Term 3 and 4.
Start planning for 2022!!
Out and About | Lake Macquarie Newcastle | Tweed Ballina | Batemans Bay | Liverpool PPC’s:
This term I have had the pleasure of attended a number of fabulous meetings - breakfast meetings, PPC meetings, Conferences and ZOOM meetings. I have valued the opportunity to share business of the Association as well as hear from the ground the issues contextually arising as well as being encouraged by the ‘solution focused’ attitude. It was indeed a joy to be ‘in the room’ together – connecting with colleagues. Some of the highlights have included: panel sessions with other State Executive Liaisons, virtual ‘on country’ experiences, supporting colleagues and taking positive action forward, gaining insight into PPC and context specific issues, channelling information in and taking new information forward into the DoE meetings that followed and of course opportunities to connect with colleagues over a meal or refreshment.
I can also now truly relate to ‘cancelled flights’ ‘delayed flights’ AND lost luggage. I am now the proud recipient of a ‘Qantas Kit’ from Qantas Link in lieu of luggage not arriving – having said that, it was such a positive experience in so many ways – there was lots of laughter –connecting with and meeting THE MOST generous and kind colleagues and local businesses AND an unexpected purchase of a new outfit !!.
We are ever reminded about the importance of the relationships we build and connections we make with each other. It is the lens we see things through, be they little things or the huge events in our lives. It is ALWAYS about who we walk with, professionally and personally.
The NSWPPA State Executive and I appreciate the opportunities we have to share expertise and spend time with you in their role as Executive Liaisons. Looking forward to catching up with you in Term 3 and Term 4.
Deest Elementum | dE Wellbeing:
I invited Petra Salhberg to join the State Executive Meeting in Week 9 to share her narrative on why she has set up the business she has and to share with us how she would like to support our teachers and school leaders in ensuring they prioritise their wellbeing. Petra spoke to us about how as teachers and leaders we create optimal conditions for students in our care to reach their full potential academically, socially and psychologically. Petra expressed her deep respect and knowledge of the role teachers and school leaders play in the lives of the students in each and every school setting.
As an Association we are relentless in our quest to see our system respond to Principal Wellbeing in all decisions made. Our individual responsibility comes in MANY different ways. This is one of the puzzle pieces you may like to consider.

Behaviour Strategy | Vice President Trish Peters
As we burtle towards the last few days of Term 2, you would be right in thinking that the Behaviour Strategy is not going to land on Day 1 of Term 3. While we have not been given any official dates, we are likely to see a release in Term 3 with professional learning and training in 2021 for implementation in 2022. Consultation is ongoing and many recommendations the PPA executive have put forward have been considered already.
At the Week 7 State Council meeting, a background to the Student Behaviour Strategy was presented to delegates to share with local PPCs. A valuable suggestion regarding the provision of support to staff after behaviour incidents of violence was put forward from the Ryde PPC last week and is already being explored by the strategy team. The PPA voice is loud and clear over the need for support for students with behaviours of concern AND support for those impacted by the behaviour.
In-school suspension was well-deliberated at last week’s executive meeting and our position is that a risk assessment should determine the feasibility of in-school suspension for each school and that, if feasible, schools then use an H & S developed ISS risk management template to contextualise procedures for their site and that is what is included in the school’s behaviour management and support template. In practice, a school ‘s behaviour plan would include either that a risk assessment identified that it wasn’t feasible on that school site, or that it was feasible and ISS would be implemented at X school according to the risk management plan.
Please contact Helen Craigie, Chair Student Wellbeing Reference Group or Trish Peters, SWRG Exec Liaison with further feedback or suggestions.
New K-6 Scope and Sequences | Vice President Norma Petrocco
New sample K-6 scope and sequences and advice have been published in each KLA for a variety of contexts. To complement the scope and sequences and enhance their use, curriculum advice is available for schools on:
- how to develop scope and sequences
- elements of a scope and sequence
- important syllabus considerations for each KLA
- evaluating a scope and sequence
Each set of scope and sequences incorporate NESA and DoE requirements.
New K-12 Vocabulary Teaching Resource | Vice President Norma Petrocco
The resource 'Using context to infer the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary' supports teachers to explicitly teach the use of context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. The resource contains information about different types of context clues and gives examples of a think aloud as an explicit teaching strategy for modelling how skilled readers use context clues to infer the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary.
This resource can be accessed on the Learning Resource Hub
Additional resources such as a 'Guide or selecting vocabulary for explicit instruction' and a 'Guide for planning and implementing explicit instruction' can also be found in the Hub.
SRE & SEE Follow Up Survey | Vice President Michael Trist
In an earlier survey, members indicated strong support for the NSWPPA to investigate changes to the implementation of Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE) in their schools. Please assist this process via a brief follow up survey:
